Learn more about relocation assistance and why you won’t get it if you don’t ask for it.

Relocation assistance at closing is real, and most homeowners don’t know to ask for it. When a short sale closes, there’s often room to negotiate funds that go directly to the homeowner to help cover moving costs, a security deposit on a new place, or simply a financial cushion during the transition. It’s a detail that rarely comes up unless someone is actively pushing for it on the homeowner’s behalf.
We always negotiate for relocation funds as part of the short sale package, and we push to get our clients the maximum amount possible given the specifics of each case. Banks aren’t required to offer this, but a well-prepared short sale package that clearly lays out the homeowner’s circumstances puts us in a stronger position to ask for it — and to justify why it should be included.
For homeowners already stretched thin by the process of leaving a home they can no longer afford, this can be the difference between a stressful move and a manageable one. It’s a good example of why the details of how a short sale is negotiated matter just as much as whether one happens at all.
